IZTECH PHOTO GALLERY

History and Mission

The İzmir Institute of Technology (İYTE) is a state university that places emphasis on research and graduate and undergraduate education in fields relevant to science and technology and on interdisciplinary studies. Like its international counterparts such as The Massachussetts Institute of Technology, the Institute adopts the organisational scheme of institutions of advanced education and intensive research oriented toward science and technology. It was founded by central government to be a centre of excellence in science and technology. In keeping with the Institute’s international identity and mission, the language of instruction is English.

The İzmir Institute of Technology is a state institution established in 1992 as the third university in the city of Izmir. Graduate education commenced in 1994. The first undergraduate students were admitted in fall 1998. In fall semester 2004, academic staff numbers 388, adiministrative staff 282. Current undergraduate matriculation is 1230, graduate students number 620. The Institute comprises a community of scientists, scholars and students, come together to explore, discover, create and produce at the vanguard of contemporary knowledge and industry. It is a centre of study and research serving the needs of human society. It welcomes and encourages the collaboration of all dedicated scientists and scholars who, through the process of research and reflection, contribute to these aims in an atmosphere of academic competence collegiality fostering scientific freedom and initiative. The founders’ vision includes the use, development, and production of advanced technology. In keeping with that vision, the Institute’s educational mission involves research in co-operation with the industry. It seeks the education of the entire scientist: profoundly aware of state-of-the-art research, engaged in actual technological production, and conscious of social responsibility. The campus technopark aims at establishing a firm link between education, training, and industrial research. A fundamental part of the founders’ vision, the technopark houses production units with research and development facilities. The focus at the Institute is on interdisciplinary education, offering major and minor programme options for competent students. In accordance with the Institute’s mission to explore and produce in an international framework, the language of instruction is English. Entering students with insufficient knowledge of English attend one year of Preparatory English School intended to lend fluency in professional and social life. Technical English and writing classes are available throughout the curricula for continued improvement and effective integration in the international academic community.

Education and Research

The İzmir Institute of Technology is a full-fledged university, comprised of The Graduate School of Engineering and Sciences and the three faculties of Science, Engineering, and Architecture. The Graduate School and all faculties are engaged in advanced research, education and training, material production, publishing, and consultancy. The Graduate School of Engineering and Sciences currently houses twenty-four Master and six Doctoral programmes. Undergraduate departments consist of Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Architecture, and City & Regional Planning. The principle of programme development at the Institute foregrounds strong undergraduate programmes in the fundamental sciences and interdisiplinary concentration on the postgraduate level. The spectrum of undergraduate disciplines was established accordingly, as were the programmes at master’s and doctoral level. The interdisciplinary postgraduate programmes in Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Energy Engineering, Environmental Engineering in the Graduate School are direct expressions of this outlook.

Other research and implementation units in the university include the Computer Applications and Research Centre, the Centre for Materials Research, the Environmental Research Centre, Biotechnology & Bioengineering Research Centre, Food Safety Research Centre and Wireless Communication Networks & Multimedia Research Centre. The Institute’s Centre for Continuing Education will soon be joined by the Centre for Distance Learning to broaden the reach of İYTE’s paedagogic energy.

The current state and nature of contemporary technology necessitate the interdisciplinary approach in all scientific ranges. The programme formations and curricula at the Institute derive from an awareness of national and international needs, of contemporary and future technologies, and the knowledge, experience, and expectations of the industry. The educational outlook of the Institute seeks to integrate instruction with research and imparts the essential concepts of the sciences in the framework of this integrated approach. Theory and practice are thus combined in a creative environment at once fostering capacity for team-work and initiative. The particular educational mission of the university has naturally led to the founding of the Centre for Continuing Education which merges advanced educational technique and collaboration with the industry to provide life-long professional education to practicing industrialists and industrial managers. The founding of the Institute Distance Learning Centre is underway to serve further a parallel goal: this unit is in the process of developing postgraduate programmes for serving the industrial community proliferating both at the campus technopark and in the city of Izmir and beyond.

The programmes and research projects in all the faculties and centres of the Institute privilege sustainable development and give priority to ecological consciousness. A substantial selection of courses in the humanities, plastic and performance arts, languages, and the social sciences offers the student channels for reflecting upon the wider, human implications of scientific research.

Environment and Transportation

The campus of the İzmir Institute of Technology is located on one of the most beautiful stretches of Aegean coast just outside the city of Izmir. Comprised of 8650 acres (more than one third of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg), it boasts an ancient Roman bath, its own waterfalls, olive groves, vineyards, valleys, hills, Mediterranean flora as well as landscaped areas—not to mention the breathtaking sunsets and dawns that must have inspired Anaxagoras as well as the builders of the earliest known olive oil atelier at Klazomenai some six kilometres from campus entrance. Unsurprisingly, the Institute’s geo-energy engineers discovered springs of thermal water on campus: the two peninsulae of Erythrai and Melenia at the junction of which campus lies, are well known for their contemporary thermal baths. Thus spanning an Edenic natural environment such as Antiquity knew it with expansive research and living premises and the urban facilities of an ancient, yet energetic, city of three million residents, the İzmir Institute of Technology offers a wide range of possibilities for the active, enquiring researcher as well as for the contemplative intellectual. Efficient transportation between campus and city centre is provided by the Institute via the Izmir-Çeşme motorway. Alternate transportation via scenic routes is also available. Situated on the sea and neighbouring upon fishing and resort villages, the campus carries the advantage of offering opportunity for various sea sports and other recreational activities. Campus mountains and hills are an attraction for trekkers and other outdoors sportsmen and women. As a result of ongoing forestry improvement work, the campus will possess a sizeable forest in the near future.

Ilıca is a large resort area near Çeşme in the extreme western tip of Turkey, in İzmir Province. A township apart in practically all its aspects, Ilıca administratively depends the municipality of the district center of Çeşme, at a distance of 5 km to the west.

Ilıca started out as a settlement towards the end of the 19th century, initially as a retreat for wealthy people, especially from İzmir, during summer holidays. Today, it is a popular destination for many. Its name makes reference to its famed thermal springs, some of which are in the sea.

Mentioned by Pausanias and Charles Texier, Ilıca thermal springs are also notable in Turkey for having been the subject of the first scientifically based analysis in Turkish language of a thermal spring, published in 1909 by Yusuf Cemal. By his time the thermal springs were well-known both internationally, scientific and journalistic literature having been published in French and in Greek, and across Ottoman lands, since the construction here of a still-standing yalı associated with Muhammad Ali of Egypt‘s son Tosun Pasha who had sought a cure in Ilıca before his premature death.

Ilıca also has a fine beach, about 1.5 km long, as well as favorable wind conditions which make Ilıca, together with the neighboring Alaçatı, an internationally prized location for windsurfing.

Go is a strategic board game for two players. It is also known as igo (Japanese), weiqi (Chinese) or baduk (Korean). Go is noted for being rich in strategic complexity despite its simple rules.

The game is played by two players who alternately place black and white stones (playing pieces, now usually made of glass or plastic) on the vacant intersections of a grid of 19×19 lines. The object of the game is to control a larger portion of the board than the opponent. A stone or a group of stones is captured and removed if it has no empty adjacent intersections, the result of being completely surrounded by stones of the opposing color.

Placing stones close together helps them support each other and avoid capture. On the other hand, placing stones far apart creates influence across more of the board. Part of the strategic difficulty of the game stems from finding a balance between such conflicting interests. Players strive to serve both defensive and offensive purposes and choose between tactical urgency and strategic plans.

Go originated in China more than 2,500 years ago, and although it is not known exactly when the game was invented, by the 3rd century BC it was already a popular pastime, as indicated by a reference to the game in the Analects of Confucius. Archaeological evidence shows that the early game was played on a board with a 17×17 grid, but by the time that the game spread to Korea and Japan in about the 7th century boards with a 19×19 grid had become standard.

The game is most popular in East Asia, but has gained some popularity in other parts of the world in recent years. Go reached the West through Japan, which is why it is commonly known internationally by its Japanese name.
