Cesme/ Ilıca Tour

ILICA PHOTO GALLERY

Ilıca is a large resort area near Cesme in the extreme western tip of Turker, in Izmir province. A township apart in practically all its aspects, Ilıca administratively depends the municipality of the district center of Çeşme, at a distance of 5 km to the west.

Ilıca started out as a settlement towards the end of the 19th century, initially as a retreat for wealthy people, especially from Izmir, during summer holidays. Today, it is a popular destination for many. Its name makes reference to its famed thermal springs, some of which are in the sea.

Mentioned by Pausanias  and Charles Texier , Ilıca thermal springs are also notable in Turkey for having been the subject of the first scientifically based analysis in Turkish language  of a thermal spring, published in 1909 by Yusuf Cemal. By his time the thermal springs were well-known both internationally, scientific and journalistic literature having been published in French  and in Greek , and across Ottoman  lands, since the construction here of a still-standing yalı  associated with Muhammad Ali of Egypt’s  son Tosun Pasha who had sought a cure in Ilıca before his premature death.

Ilıca also has a fine beach, about 1.5 km long, as well as favorable wind conditions which make Ilıca, together with the neighboring Alacati , an internationally prized location for windsurfing.

Professionals From Korea

KIM SEUNG-JUN (9p)

seung jun kim

Kim Seung-jun was born in 1973, 23rd of March (according to the Chinese calendar).

He started playing go when he was 10, he learned to play from his father (about EGF 2dan). Although his brother and sister quit baduk rather quickly he kept playing. Two years later he became yonguseng (insei) and another 3 years later he became professional player (1988). In this 5 years he did nothing, but play Baduk. According to his personality, it’s hard to image. He is a very outgoing person, these days he enjoys many kind of games and sports. In addition to playing Baduk, he enjoys all kind of sports; his most recent hobby is golf. He is very skillful in billiard and foot volleyball.

He enjoys singing as well:

Since he became pro, he qualified at least to the final selection (best 32) of several tournaments (Dongyang Cup, Myeong-in Cup, BC Card Cup, LG Cup /World Champ/, Gukki Cup, King of Kings Cup, Kiseong Cup, New talents Cup, Samsung Cup /World Champ/, Guksu Cup, Pakasu Cup, Maxim Cup, Chunlan Cup, Wonik Cup, etc…).

Some of his most remarkable results:

-In 1994, he made it to the final of Gukki Cup. He got second place, after losing against Lee Chang-ho (1-3). In this time he was in army (has to be for 2 years), and he just got holiday to play for the final. ^^ After the first round he won, his senior let him study a bit in evenings (of course it can’t be compared with studying diligently, but still^^).

-In 1996, he made it to the semi-final of the Samsung World Championship.

-In 2003, he was the member of the Winner team in the Nongshim Korean-Japanese-Chinese Team World Championship.

-In 2005 March, he became 9 dan pro.

-In 2006, 2nd place of the King of Kings tournament (age 25~35)

-He has been participated several times of the Korean Baduk League (The best 25 players on the rating list are automatically qualified, plus about 16 players can qualify from a qualification tournament. The pro players are divided into teams (6 people per team) and each team play twice against the other teams. This is one of the biggest events in Korea. It is held during the whole year; games are played from Thursday to Sunday and shown live on Baduk TV.

-He has been played on Chinese league as well. (It is a similar team tournament like in Korea.) Therefore he has been in China several times, thanks to his friendly outgoing style, he learnt Chinese very fast, now he speaks fluent Chinese.

-In this year he qualified to Wonik Cup, but the final selection hasn’t started yet.

-There are not so many professional players who are commenting on Baduk Tv, but he is one of the well-known commentator among of them.

-Director of Hangkuk Kiwon since 2009.

He is passionate about spreading Go in the west.

He was in Europe for a short European Baduk tour with fellow pros Mok Jinseok 9p and Diana 1p. They played simultaneous games in Budapest, and they commented games from the Romanian Shusaku Tournament. He played with a lucky player who won his chance on the lottery. ^^ (4 stones against a 5 dan)

His Korean nickname’s meaning is BlackKnight due to his dark complexion; however in Europe he got a similar, but new nickname; Blackie.

He did a live Web-cam commentary with Diana on The Amsterdam Pandanet Tournament in English and he has been working on his English continuously.

  DIANA KOSZEGI (1p)

diana-koszegi

Kőszegi Diána was born in 1983 August in Budapest. She began playing Go when she was 9. Initially she was taught by her father, Kőszegi Sándor (who teaches Go to elementary schools students). When she turned 11, Pocsai Tibor, who was the winner of the European Go Championship in 1988 continued teaching her. She not only learned how to play Go, but also how to teach. She teaches Go on KGS Go Server.

In 1996 she got to know the 9 dan professional Yasutoshi Yasuda, with whom she kept in contact thanks to Shigeno Yuki. Yasuda was a great influence on her. Diána always wanted to be Yasuda’s pupil, but it could never happen because of financial and personal problems. Yasuda was also very busy at that time. Diána thinks of Yuki as her own sister. Both Yasuda and Yuki were a big influence on her.

When she was 14 in 1997 she placed 4th at the 1st World Woman Amateur Baduk Championship in Seoul, then in the autumn she placed 2nd at the 2nd European Woman Amateur Go Championship.

After she placed 9th at the World Amateur Go Championship in 1998, she was invited to Japan and Korea to study as an insei. Considering her young age her family did not let her go.

In 2000 March she won the European Youth Championship that was held in Sinaia. She placed 2nd in the previous two years, and again in 2001. In the same year, even though she placed only joint 8th at the Hungarian Go Championship, winning the play offs between the top 6, she became the Hungarian Go Champion. She was the first Hungarian invited to professional competitions to China, while still an amateur. Representing Europe she entered these competitions in 2000 (Shanghai), 2001 (Guiyang), 2002 (Hong Kong).

Since 2001 she has continued studying Go without a tutor. In 2001 she stayed in Japan for 1.5 months thanks to Kobayashi Chizu and Satoru. In 2003 she went up to the Hungarian university, ELTE (she was studying at the programming mathematician department), but she didn’t complete her course, because of an invitation the the KimWon Baduk Academy, thanks to Mr Eo Jong Soo (7 dan Korean). She got to know him at the World Championship held in Korea in 2003.

She went to Korea in 2004 for 3 months but then returned because she couldn’t extend her visa. Until she was promoted to professional, from 2005 as an insei she was competing at the league in Seoul. In 2005 she is studying at the Korean Myongji University and is teaching Go online. As the fourth European professional she was promoted to professional by the Korean Go Association on 2008 January 4.

She translated to english the book “21st Century New Openings” by Kim Sung Rae (4Dan).
